Kilgo has a rich history and tradition of being a neighborhood church. We sit in the heart of the Plaza-Midwood Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our goal is to be a shelter, sanctuary, a place of refreshment for the body, mind and soul.
Our neighborhood is diverse, our mission is to mirror and embrace our diversity. God creates us each unique and blesses us individually to add to the whole community. We can not be complete without all that God created. When God finished creating humanity God saw that it was very GOOD! Our members, our neighbors and all people in our eyes and God's are created very GOOD!
Come share in the new and exciting ministry happening at your neighborhood church, Kilgo.
Kilgo was founded as a neighborhood church. The Plaza and Midwood areas were fast growing communities that needed a faith foundation. Bishop John Carlisle Kilgo helped to charter the congregation and thus the congregation took on his family name.
The Church was organized under the leadership of Reverend John R. Hamilton on September 5, 1943 with 37 Charter Members and met for the first 15 months at the Midwood school auditorium. The current location of the congregation was given to Kilgo in August of 1944 by the Charlotte Methodist Mission Society. This was the property and home formerly owned by John C. McNeil. Kilgo worshiped in the old home from 1945 until 1959 when ground was broken for the new sanctuary.
The education building was completed in 1954. We have been using the current sanctuary since October 1960. Although the outward appearance of our facility has not changed drastically since brick was added to our center for children, the inside has gone through many transformations.
We have recently renovated our second floor of our education building to hold our administrative offices and to house Sheperd's Center East, an organization that assists seniors.
Our community around us has transformed and we as a church strive to be the community church as we were founded. We have begun new programs to reach all people. Many of these new programs you will find on our calendar of events and our website. If you have questions about anything please call us at 704-334-7348 or email us at kilgoumc@gmail.com.
